Gynecology & Obstetrics

Gynecology and Obstetrics are two closely related fields of medicine that focus on the health of the female reproductive system and the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Gynecology specifically deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions affecting the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. Common gynecological issues include menstrual disorders, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, fibroids, endometriosis, and cervical cancer. Gynecologists also provide preventive care through screenings like Pap smears and HPV testing, as well as birth control counseling and menopause management.

Obstetrics, on the other hand, focuses on pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Obstetricians are trained to manage the care of pregnant women, monitor fetal development, and address complications during pregnancy and delivery. They assist with labor and delivery, whether it involves a natural birth, cesarean section, or any other form of intervention required for the safety of both mother and child. Obstetricians also provide postnatal care, supporting mothers through recovery and ensuring the well-being of newborns. Many physicians specialize in both gynecology and obstetrics, offering comprehensive reproductive care that addresses both general women’s health and pregnancy-related concerns. Together, these specialties play a crucial role in supporting women’s health through various stages of life, from adolescence to menopause and beyond.
